Stevie Ray and the Austin Skyline; 2011
by John Rogers on Jan.30, 2011, under Austin Texas, HDR, Travel
I’ve photographed the Stevie Ray Vaughan statue in Austin Texas several times & every time I’m there, someone has left a gift for Stevie on the base. Last time it was a red rose, this time it was a guitar pick lying at his feet. Perhaps these are simply a reflection on the live music scene that Austin Texas is so well known for, and therefore should not surprise me, nevertheless I find these little tokens quite touching. I’ve been meaning to do a more current photo of the Stevie Ray Vaughan statue for awhile. The challenge is getting the rather dark statue to pop out from the evening sky. This image is a combination of light painting & HDR. I did three long exposures of Stevie while lighting the statue and surrounding area with my super duper mini flashlight. You can see my other photos of the Stevie statue here.

If you find yourself in Austin Texas and feel like going out for a run walk or bike ride, check out the Town Lake hike & bike trail. It winds for about 10 miles along the Colorado River in downtown Austin. There are lots of access points so you can make your workout as short or long as you desire. With Austin’s plethora of musicians, often you will find a talented individual providing a little music for the hikers & their dogs. Another musician you will always find on the trail is Stevie Ray Vaughan. His statue stands silently with guitar in hand on Auditorium Shores watching the people pass by.
